Female football fans are an interesting bunch.
Yes, those of us who really love the game can quote stats, give you a rundown of transactions, and break down the beauty of the Steelers’ 3-4 defense; but we do share some similarites with the girls who are only trying to impress (or share some Sunday time with) their boyfriends - the ones who wear 4-inch heels to tailgate and congratulate kickers on great grand slams.
Like these women, we know the names of some also-ran journeymen simply because they’re attractive, we pick a second-favorite team with great uniforms or cute colors (Yes, cute! I’m talking to you, Baltimore), and we secretly wonder just how those jerseys stay so clean from game to game. I used to assume wealthy players and teams simply scrapped them at the end of each game until I read pieces on the Packers’ seamstress and the late Rose Ficarelli of the Chicago Bears. Here is the latest piece on Bob Barone and his wife, Kathie, who work for the Philadelphia Eagles, New Jersey Jets, and the New York Football Giants. They’ve been scrubbing stains (blood…grass…paint…no bleach!) and patching rips for nearly 30 years, even custom-tailoring pants for the notoriously picky Terrell Owens (Eagles) and Jason Sehorn (Giants). Enjoy!
